Many references list A. palmatum as hardy to USDA Zone 5, but the experience of our customers and Arboretum suggests that many are marginal there. Actually, all Acer palmatum are Hardy to zone 6, and some to zone 5. See our list below of MAPLES FOR COLD WINTER AREAS. Check our FDA Hardiness Map to find your zone. 	ACER palmatum Beni shi en	Discovered by Harold Johnston,this is a heat-tolerant new introduction, one of the few variegated red trees. It is deep dusky rose red in spring, deepening to dark purple. The leaves are deeply divided and sickle-shaped, broadly outlined cream on the inside curves. Habit is compact, round-headed and upright. As the season progresses, a deep undertone of green develops, and fall color is orange. Patented.	5	9	deeply divided
	ACER palmatum Beni ubi gohan	(also known as Beni ubi ocha) The lobes of this small, slower-growing, purple leafed tree are sharply pointed. The leaves are held stiffly on bright red petioles, parallel to the ground, giving it a very spritely well organized look. As the tree matures the branches form layers. The color is also very unusual, and difficult to describe. Deep green, suffused with purple red in the spring, turns deep purple in the sun. 	ACER palmatum Bloodgood	Beatufiful lawn tree with crimson spring color darkening to a deep red that holds all summer. Prominent brilliant red seeds hang in profusion all summer. Crimson fall color. 	ACER campestre	(Hedge Maple) Growing slowly to 10' in 10 years, reaching 30' after many years, this little tree is valuable as a small lawn tree or a tall hedge. It will stand pruning extremely well; in fact Vertrees had a formal sheared Campestre hedge that surrounded Maplewood. Its handsome deep green oak-like small foliage and slow rate of growth make it an interesting subject for bonsai, especially group plantings. 	ACER capillipes	One of the very best of the snake-barked maples, with very distinct white stripes on purple-red young stems, becoming white horizontal stripes on dark red-green older wood. Excellent for winter interest in the garden.	4	10
	ACER palmatum Chitose yama	This is one of the best container trees. The habit is especially nice, being broader than it is tall, heavily weeping with age. Bright crimson new growth each spring turns a good deep red that is hard to resist. 	ACER circinatum	(Vine Maple) Native to our Oregon and northern California mountains, this is a close relative of A. japonicum and A. shirasawanum. 	ACER palmatum Enkan	Very similar to Red Pygmy in size and habit, but holds its deep red color better in very hot climates. 	Acer japonicum Fairy Lights	Leaves are more finely divided than A.j. ÔGreen CascadeÕ on this very slow-growing green tree. Its form is an upright large bush. Fall colors range from gold to scarlet.	5	9	laceleaf
	Acer japonicum Filicifolium	This tree is similar to Acer japonicum aconitifolium ÔMaiku jaku,Õ although the leaves seem to be a bit smaller and less substantial. It is also slower growing.	5	9	laceleaf
	ACER palmatum Fireglow	A wonderful selection from ItalyÕs Fratelli Gilardelli. Brighter in color than Bloodgood, with excellent sun tolerance. Maybe the best upright red maple for hot, humid areas. Harold Johnston reports that it grows in full sun in Alabama with no burn. The size makes it very attractive as a patio tree.	5	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum Garnet	Very fast in youth, Garnet will look two years older than other dissectums at age two, and yet it reaches only 6' with age. The rich red-orange color develops best with some sun. They are also beautiful in containers.	5	9	laceleaf
	Acer glabrum	The rocky mountain maple is a shrub-like small tree that likes the shade, and has large shaggy leaves on deep purple-red twigs. Older bark is slightly fissured and a light grey. Fall color is light, bright yellow to orange.	5	9
	ACER japonicum Green Cascade	An excellent choice for Northern gardeners (USDA zone V) who want a lace-leaf maple. Large finely-cut leaves of a good medium green on a vigorous strongly pendulous small tree. Must be staked to establish a central leader, or place it where it can cascade over a wall or bank. 	ACER palmatum Green Star	This is a big beautiful Amoenum type that has big bold bright green leaves like stars. It is vigorous and gives a bold foliage look, and astounding yellow, orange and crimson fall color.	5	9
	ACER griseum	(Paperbark Maple) The beautiful cinnamon-brown exfoliating bark, brilliant scarlet fall color and stately habit of this slow-growing Acer make it a focal point in any setting. Very adaptable and hardy, it is a slow grower, reaching 8 to 10 feet in 10 years, and 20 to 30 feet at maturity. These are healthy vigorous seedlings that would make fine lawn trees.	5	0	3-lobed
	ACER rufinerve Hatsuyuki	An easy to grow medium sized tree with year round interest. The variegation is irregular, some leaves have big splashes of white, but most are just edged white. The unusual bark and crisp look of the dark green variegated leaves make it notable. Fall color varies from year to year, but mine is in a very shady location and is usually gold.	5	10

	ACER palmatum Hogyoku	One of the very old Japanese cultivars, Hogyoku is often overlooked today because it is not a flashy tree except in the Autumn when it is a bright pumpkin orange. I love it for its sturdy habit , small stature, beautiful pale bark, and sun and wind tolerant medium-green leaves. A wonderful choice for hot areas in the South and to accompany Osakazuki anywhere.	5	9

	ACER palmatum Ichigyoji	Often planted with Osakazuki and Hogyoku for fall drama, Ichigyo ji has yellow, gold, and crimson autumn color. It is like Osakazuki in all other ways, so that if the two are planted together they give a big surprise in the fall!	5	9
	ACER palmatum Iijima sunago	Outstanding and unusual, the large substantial leaves open a wonderful coral-red and darken to a rich red-brown. The variegation does not show up until mid-summer when these dark leaves are sprinkled with bright green irregular spots, like green sand sprinkled on a mahogany surface. Mid-ribs and branchlets are also bright green. Slow-growing, stocky structure. Very interesting branching pattern.	5	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum Inaba shidare	(Leaves of Rice Plant) One of the old Japanese cultivars, Inaba shidare is very different in habit from the other dissectums. It would make a tree even if not staked, its habit undulates upward, and yet it retains the weeping effect. The deep ruby red of the leaves holds all summer and the bright red petioles set off the color quite nicely. It is easy to grow, takes the hot sun and humidity well, and makes an outstanding container tree.	5	9	laceleaf
	ACER palmatum Inazuma	(Thunder & Lightning) The habit of this deep purple-leafed cultivar is especially charming to me. My first introduction to Inazuma was in the winter, and I loved the branching pattern even before I noticed the white striations on the older wood. The branching is horizontal and spreading, and somewhat pendulous at the tips. It is vigorous without being rangy and very desirable for containers. Bright crimson red fall color.	5	9	deeply divided
	ACER palmatum Italy Red	Very similar in leaf shape and color to Bloodgood, but only about one-half the size. It came to us by way of Mr. Vertrees who noted only that he had received it from an Italian source, and that he considered it to be too close to Bloodgood to merit naming. We now have had the original imported tree in the nursery for long enough to recognize the difference in size. It is a very sturdy, wind and sun tolerant small tree, certainly worthy of consideration where Bloodgood is too large.	5	9	palmate
	Acer japonicum Itaya	Large bold light-green leaves on this full-moon maple are not quite as large as A.j. ÔVitifolium.Õ It is a strong tree with brilliant fall colors of red, orange, yellow, and gold.	5	9	palmate

	ACER shirasawanum Junihitoye	Moved recently from the species japonicum along with Aureum, this is a small tree with beautiful very small orbicular leaves of a good medium green held stiffly horizontal on short petioles. The leaves open like a Japanese fan! Like Aureum, the red blooms and samaras are held above the leaves and are therefore very prominent. We find it is more easily grown than Aureum, although it is much the same except for color. Excellent container tree. Fall color is golden-yellow.	5	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum Kasagi yama	One of the most unusual and rare maples we grow, it makes a charming open spreading shrub of outstanding color. Certainly as beautiful as any flower in the spring garden, the deep coral-red leaves are accented by light green at the margins and dark, almost black veins. 	ACER palmatum Kinran	The Japanese name means woven with "golden strings", and that's exactly what it looks like with its beautiful golden petioles and twigs contrasting with the cascading purple foliage in the spring. Kinran turns green, tipped red, for summer and magically transforms to a breathtaking gold and crimson in the fall. 	ACER palmatum Kogane sakae	(Golden Prosperity) The unusual bark color, light green with yellow markings, makes this slower-growing tree stand out from other maples. Star-shaped leaves of the heptalobum type and a beautiful layered habit show off the fall color of gold crowned with red.	5	9
	ACER palmatum Korean Gem	(Koreanum) A wonderful choice for fall color, with a brilliant show of yellow, orange and red. This spreading tree has very dark, almost black, wood which shows the winter silhouette to advantage. 	Acer japonicum Kujaku nishiki	This tree has leaves similar to Acer japonicum aconitifolium; however, Mr. Vertrees says the leaves are variegated with white. We have not seen the variegation on our younger trees yet and wonder if the variegation is stable. We did observe variegations in the fall color.	5	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum Kurabu yama	Deep coral spring color sets this outstanding little tree off in the early spring. 	ACER palmatum Matsukaze	Spectacular spring colors of bright purple accented with green veins on a wide spreading, large leafed tree, Matsu kaze is wider than tall, multi-trunked, with a softly cascading habit. 	A.p. ssp. matsumurae seedlings matsumurae dissectum	This is a group of seedlings selected for bonsai out of the thousands that we propagate each year. We feel they are outstanding for either leaf or form or color. They all have good potential for bonsai, but are still very young, and untrained. 	ACER japonicum Meigetsu	Typical of the species, this strong-growing, beautiful tree has large orbicular leaves of great beauty, and spectacular fall colors, ranging from gold to crimson.	5	9	palmate
	ACER shirasawanum Microphyllum	The leaves of this very desirable tree are the same shape and size as the beautiful "Golden Full Moon" maple Aureum, but are a good fresh green. Wonderful for bonsai and small gardens, it is much easier to grow than Aureum. Fall color is golden-yellow.	5	9	palmate
	Acer japonicum Mikasayama	This is a smaller-leaved form of Acer japonicum. It has green leaves in spring and summer, and a nice form, but its true glory is in autumn when leaves blaze with orange to red fall color. It may be a species of Acer sieboldianum. Rare.	5	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum Mikawa yatsubusa	Always in great demand because of its unique habit of holding its leaves arranged as closely as Òshingles on a roof.Ó This tree always looks neatly pruned by a Japanese gardener. Good medium green leaf color turns golden-orange in the fall.	5	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum Mizu kuguri	The beautiful colors are subtle and ever-changing on this small tree. The rather large leaves open with an overlay of pinkish rose over medium green, changing to clear green for summer. Fall colors are bright gold with crimson.	5	9	palmate
	ACER truncatum mono mono	(Painted Maple) Th uique leaves have a more round form and are less deeply lobed than those of A. truncatum. The beautiful bark is a smooth yellow-gray, contrasting with the deep red buds in the winter.	5	8	palmate
	Acer circinatum Monroe	This dissected form of the Vine Maple was found in the deep conifer forests of the McKenzie River high in the Cascade mountains of the Pacific Northwest. 	Acer monspessulanum	From the Mediterranean and middle east, so more drought resistant than most maples, it has tiny three lobed leaves that remind me more of oaks than of maples. In the wild it forms a small densely branched tree. These little seedlings have interesting trunks and branching, but have not yet been pruned. Something interesting for hot, dry areas.	4	9
	ACER palmatum Moonfire	Deep red all summer and crimson in the fall, the leaves of Moonfire look almost opalescent with blue when seen in open shade, and with the sun shining through them, they have a ruby glow. It is a slow-growing tree in youth.	5	9	palmate

	Acer shirasawanum Ogurayama	This tree has small leaves for a full-moon maple. They are green and slightly pubescent (hairy), which may indicate that this is a species of Acer sieboldianum. Fall color is brilliant in shades of orange to red.	5	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum Omato	The famous cultivar that stands at the entranceway to the Portland Botanical Gardens, it is a large sturdy tree with large leaves of bright medium green and very brilliant crimson fall color.	5	9

	ACER japonicum Oregon Fern	A selection by Vertrees, this tree is between Maiku jaku and Green Cascade in habit, but differs in its fall color, being a very consistent deep brilliant ruby red. 	ACER shirasawanum Palmatifolium	Breath-taking fall colors of clear yellow, orange and crimson seem to be lighted from within on this elegant, layered tree. 	ACER pseudosieboldianum	(Korean maple) THE tree for all of you who have been longing for a Japanese maple but live in an area with extremely cold winters. The leaves on this lovely little tree are somewhere between A. japonicum and A. shirasawanum in shape and texture and it is a little more open in habit than either. Certainly a beautiful little tree, and with the big bonus of absolutely brilliant fall colors ranging from scarlet to orange and yellow.	3	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum Red Dragon	This is a very, very beautiful tree, slower than most lace leaf trees. Our mother tree was grafted low and staked-up to form a central leader, rather than the more usual mushroom shape. The color is a good bright red, less purple than Inaba shidare, and just as beautiful. It seems to have good resistance to leaf burn, and with the use of Protekt, can take much more sun than most lace leafs.	5	9	laceleaf

	ACER pal matum Robinson's Red	(Atropurpureum) A good customer told us about these little trees. They are propagated by seed from an A.p. atropurpureum that survived an extremely cold winter when all the other seedlings in the crop had frozen to death. After many generations, seedlings from this tree still seem to hold their cold hardiness. These are very nice little red seedlings, well branched and 12 to 18 inches tall now. Since they are seedlings, some variability is to be expected.	5	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum Rubrum	Large red leaves turn dark maroon red in spring and add green tones for summer. Fall color is bright red. Early sources placed this tree in the heptalobum group.	5	9

	ACER palmatum Saoshika	Often seen in gardens in Japan, this special little tree has large star-shaped, bright green leaves that are held horizontally, giving it a layered look. 	Acer sieboldianum Sode no uchi	Very small leaves make this little green tree popular for bonsai, containers, and rock gardens. It is slow-growing, especially when young. Leaves are bright green, and fall color is bright yellow with red tones. It forms a rounded bush.	4	9	palmate
	ACER palmatum ssp. matsumurae	All will make beautiful container trees or landscape specimens. This is the sub-species from which most of the cultivars come. 	ACER palmatum Sumi nagashi	(The Art of Marbling: a Butterfly) A very strong growing dark, dark red landscape type, with the ever-changing tones that the old Japanese plant breeders so admired. 	ACER palmatum Tamuke yama	A beautiful deep red, outstanding for the weeping habit and the deep red bark, which is overcast with white. The leaves are just a little more substantial, and Vertrees reports that it holds up especially well in conditions of high heat, and humidity. 	ACER tegmentosum	The most hardy of all the striped-barked maples. It has wonderful long racemes of chartreuse samaras that along with the medium green leaves appear very early in the spring; an interesting combination for cold winter areas.	5	10
	ACER palmatum Temple	This beautiful red tree was propagated from an un-named variety outside an old Japanese temple. Leaves emerge bright red, darken a bit for summer, and turn bright red again in fall. It has a very graceful habit and brings a feeling of history with it.	5	9	palmate
	ACER shirasawanum ssp. tenuifolium	A wonderful garden or lawn tree with beautiful translucent small leaves. It is very rare small tree, sought after for bonsai as well, because of its diminutive habit, the light green color and thin, almost papery texture of the leaves.	5	9	palmate
	ACER triflorum	Very rare in this country, and certainly deserving of wider use. This little tree has wonderful deep green pubescent three-lobed leaves that turn the most startling golden yellow with orange-red speckles in the fall. Its autumn color is the most beautiful of all trifoliate maples. The mature bark is ash brown and fissured, peeling in scales, and young branches are orange to yellow orange, not peeling.	5	9	3-lobed
	ACER palmatum Trompenburg	Deep red spring and summer, crimson in the fall; the colors are enough to recommend it, but the truly exciting feature of this tree is the unusual foliage shape. The leaflets are rolled down and under on the edges, forming a downward curving tube. This gives a beautiful textural effect, emphasizing the horizontal line of the branches. 	Acer truncatum	(Shantung or Purpleblow Maple) A very good lawn tree that can take difficult situations, including drought, when established. It does well in the inland valleys of California. 	ACER circinatum Pacific Fire	Breathtaking flaming red winter twigs offer just what the winter garden needs, COLOR!
