A spot that is out of sweeping wind and severe afternoon heat should be found for your maple. Most cultivars benefit from full morning sun and appreciate some afternoon shade. A spot on the north or east side of a house is ideal in most locations, since it affords some wind protection and also blocks the afternoon heat. The intermittent shade of large trees is also an excellent placement for hot areas; full sun is appropriate only in cooler areas, where summer highs are rarely over 90 degrees F. Maples are widely adaptable and can be grown in most parts of the USA, see Hardiness.
