Recommendations for Winter Protection
In USDA Zones 5 many of the maples can be grown in the landscape with no special protection, but all will appreciate a good mulch, and a site that is protected by a wall, fence or large tree. Once you are into zone 5a and colder all of the maples, except those indicated above will need to be grown in containers and over-wintered in a cold frame or an unheated garage, unheated porch or unheated basement. They can be pulled into winter storage when the temperatures drop below 15 degrees at night, and pulled out with the first tulips. Ideal temperatures for over-wintering container grown maples are from 15 degrees to 45 degrees. They will not need light, so the basement is fine, but they will need to be checked for moisture periodically. Soil should be kept moist, but not wet.
