How Big Is It?

Our goal is to exceed your expectations. When you open the box a big smile should spread across your face. The size groups refer to the maturity of the tree. There is great diversity among the trees both in growth rate and mature size. The dwarf group will always be the smallest and in maturity may never be larger than 3'. However many in the Palmate group will grow to 2' in their first year and reach 6' by their fourth year. We will try to include information about growth rate in the description of individual trees. These are averages. It is very difficult to create an average and include extremes. Sizes are given as height(ft.) x width(ft.) x caliper(in. diameter of trunk at base).

Size A
2 to 3 years old
1.5' x 1' x .25" to 2' x 1.5' x .35"

Size #A is grown in a 1-gallon pot

Size B
3 to 4 years old
2' x 1.5' x .35" to 3' x 2' x .5"

Size #B is grown in a 2 to 3-gallon pot

Size C
4 to 5 years old
3' x 2' x .5" to 5' x 3' x .75"

Size #C is grown in a 5-gallon pot

Note: For trees marked as "for Bonsai", you may expect sizes smaller than those listed for stock trees. See our Bonsai page for more information.

Please look to individual descriptions for more information regarding size and growth habit. I have listed the approximate height you can expect from the individual cultivars at 10 years of age after each listing. Separate estimates are given for patio container and landscape-grown trees. Estimates are made from available sources and personal observation, but it must be remembered that these trees respond strongly to environmental pressures and size depends largely on culture.
